Who is The Holy Spirit? Part 1

The Holy Spirit is God

making HIS home in us.

1. The Holy Spirit is God

Scripture directly identifies the Spirit as God.

  • Acts 5:3–4
Peter says, “You have lied to the Holy Spirit,” and then says, “You have not lied to men but to God.”
    The Spirit = God.

  • 2 Corinthians 3:17
    The Lord is the Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit is not a force, energy, or feeling. He is fully God.

2. The Holy Spirit is a Person

The Spirit speaks, teaches, wills, can be grieved, and intercedes.

  • He speaks: Acts 13:2
The Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul…’”

  • He teaches: John 14:26
“He will teach you all things.”

  • He has a will: 1 Corinthians 12:11
The Spirit distributes gifts “as He wills.”

  • He can be grieved: Ephesians 4:30
“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.”
NOTE: Grieving the Holy Spirit is causing Him sorrow by resisting, rejecting, or disobeying His holy guidance and character in our lives, according to Ephesians 4:30.

  • He intercedes: Romans 8:26–27
“The Spirit intercedes for the saints…”

These are attributes of a person, not an impersonal force.

3. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of Christ

He proceeds from the Father and is sent by Jesus.

  • John 15:26
“The Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father.”

  • Romans 8:9
“If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”

The Spirit is united with the Father and the Son in essence and mission.

4. The Holy Spirit is the Promise of the New Covenant

God promised to put His Spirit inside His people.

  • Ezekiel 36:27
“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes.”

  • Acts 2:33
Jesus “poured out” the promised Spirit.

5. The Holy Spirit Regenerates and Gives New Life

He is the agent of our new birth.

  • John 3:5–6
“Unless one is born of… the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

  • Titus 3:5
    “renewing of the Holy Spirit.”

6. The Holy Spirit Indwells Believers

He lives in God’s people permanently.

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19
Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

  • Romans 8:11
    “The Spirit… dwells in you.”

7. The Holy Spirit Empowers and Anoints

He gives power for living, serving, and witnessing.

  • Acts 1:8
“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.”

  • Luke 4:18
Jesus reads Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me…”

8. The Holy Spirit Guides Into Truth and Reveals Christ

His role centers on pointing people to Jesus.

  • John 16:13–14
“He will guide you into all truth… He will glorify Me.”

9. The Holy Spirit Sanctifies

He transforms believers into Christ’s likeness.

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:13
    “Sanctification by the Spirit.”

  • Galatians 5:22–23
The fruit of the Spirit is produced in us, not by us.

10. The Holy Spirit Seals and Guarantees Our Salvation

He marks believers as God’s own.

  • Ephesians 1:13–14
Believers are “sealed with the Holy Spirit… who is the guarantee of our inheritance.”
